British Ice Skating’s final day of competition at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games is here, and it’s a fitting finale: Ellia Smeding takes to the ice for the Women’s 1500m Long Track Speed Skating, Great Britain’s last event of the Games.
After a landmark week for Team GB on the oval, Ellia returns for one last race on Olympic ice - a distance that demands composure, timing and endurance, and one that has been a key focus across her season. Day 14 brings the closing chapter of BIS competition in Milano Cortina, and one more chance to get behind Ellia as she powers through four laps on the world’s biggest stage.

Today’s schedule (Day 14)
Women’s 1500m - Long Track Speed Skating
Athlete: Ellia Smeding (GBR)
This is British Ice Skating’s final event of Milano Cortina 2026.
What to expect in the 1500m for Ellia Smeding
The 1500m is often described as the “middle distance” of long track speed skating - but there’s nothing in-between about it.
Skaters need:
A fast opening lap to establish speed without burning too much energy early
Controlled acceleration through the middle of the race to keep the rhythm
A strong final lap when fatigue hits hardest, holding technique and efficiency to the line
Races are skated in pairs, with athletes separated into lanes and switching every lap. It’s a test of pacing and mental sharpness as much as raw speed.

How to follow along
You can follow today’s action and Ellia’s progress via official Olympic coverage and live results, with updates also shared across British Ice Skating’s social channels.
