ADULT SKATING
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF ADULT SKATING
Think ice skating is just for kids? Think again!
With a thriving community of adult ice skaters in the UK, there's never been a better time to get on the ice and find your new passion!
This page provides advice and guidance from adult skaters, for adult skaters, to help you navigate the world of adult ice skating and answer questions you might have as you progress in your skating journey.

GETTING STARTED
AM I TOO OLD TO ICE SKATE?
This question gets asked a lot, but the answer is you are never too old to ice skate - whatever your age, you will be welcomed by adult skaters of all age categories at your local rink.
You might be just 18 and feel that somehow skating passed you by, but it really hasn’t. You might be a young parent ready to learn alongside your kids, or an older person long past retirement ready to enjoy all the health benefits and social connections that skating brings to your life.
Whether you already know how to ice skate or are looking to start learning, you will be inspired to see many adult skaters - even over the age of 70 - who very often started or returned to skating relatively late in life.
Whatever your age, it is always a good idea to find a professional coach or join a group to guide your progress. Below you can search for your closest ice rink, which will offer a variety of learn-to-skate classes and courses, and for local ice skating clubs where you can meet other adult skaters.
Take that step of courage and transform your life!
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ICE SKATING?
-
Stress relief- While you skate all your problems seem to melt away. It feels impossible to worry about anything whilst focusing on the glide!
-
Balance and co-ordination improvement – you may be surprised to find that balancing on one foot becomes rather easy and your coordination skills will grow.
-
Thinking skills – as you progress and learn all these new turns and tricks you find that you gradually become much more focused and are able to follow along quite easily - it's as if a whole new area of your mind has been awakened!
-
Social benefits - skating is a great way to make new friends and grow your social circle.

TESTS & COMPETING
I'VE LEARNED THE BASICS - WHAT COMES NEXT?
Once you've got to grips with the basics, there are a range of ways you can continue to develop your skating. If you're interested in a specific discipline, you might consider exploring different branches of skating, such as figure skating, ice dance, synchronized skating, or even speed skating - find out more about these here.
National Skills Tests are the next phase of a skater’s journey after completing the Skate UK programme. They are designed to be a development tool that facilitates progression through skating competencies as they increase in difficulty.
Competitions are a great option for those who wish to challenge themselves and put their skills to the test in a structured environment. Many local rinks host beginner-friendly competitions, allowing skaters to gain experience and confidence before progressing to higher levels. From artistic programs to technical elements, competitions provide opportunities to refine your skills and receive valuable feedback from judges.

You can join your local rink’s figure skating club to stay updated on and gain access to beginner-friendly competitions, training camps, and seminars held at your rink. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded skaters and learn from each other. In the adult competitive skating world, we have a saying: “We don’t compete against each other; we compete with each other.”
Regular practice is key to continued improvement. Whether you take private lessons, attend public skating sessions, or practice drills on your own, consistent effort will help refine your technique and build confidence on the ice. At every stage, your coach will be able to advise you on what comes next and how to progress.

RACHAEL RICHARDS
I’m Rachael Richards, 52 years old and returned to skating as an adult in 2009 having spent 7 years skating when I was younger - so in total I’ve been skating for 23 years (and counting) but involved with the sport for 40. I skate in Gold level adults, and my home club is Whitley Bay.
Skating as an adult is fab, you have double community joy with the younger skaters at the rink as well as there being a thriving adult community at Whitley Bay, across the UK and internationally. Its brilliant to spend time with so many amazing skaters and hear their journeys as well as sharing challenges. The best thing about being an adult skater is how we all aim to lift each other up and support each other. Travelling abroad for skating camps and comps is also terrific fun.

RACHAEL RICHARDS
DAN RODENBURY
I’m Toby and I am a member of the Adult Working Group for British Ice Skating. I found skating as a great way to try regain some fitness following Covid lockdowns. I signed up for some group lessons as I thought it would be nice to learn how to stop, and like most people who’ve caught the bug, I’ve just continued to set my goals higher without even really realising I’ve reached the ones I set out to conquer.
Having originally started learning both Free Skating and Ice Dance, I have since 2024 been focusing just on dance. With busy and complex schedules as adults, I’ve been extremely fortune to have found a partner to work where we can push each other to achieve more every single week

TOBY FORSTER
DAN RODENBURY
My name is Tina; as a child, I skated in Cape Town but gave it up after leaving school. After a 32-year break raising a family and establishing a business, I returned to the ice, and it felt like I had rediscovered my passion. During my ‘lost years,’ a thriving adult skating community has emerged. I’m honoured to be a part of this wonderful, supportive, and accepting community that competes both in the UK and internationally.
I firmly believe that age is just a number, and I’m dedicated to proving that you’re never too old to be young! As adult skaters, we have the opportunity to inspire the younger generation with our positive attitude and perseverance, demonstrating that skating can be a lifelong pursuit.
With many years of experience in skating, I’m always eager to share my knowledge and learn from other skaters as well.

TINA PRETORIUS
KEITH HUDSON
I have been skating since 2022. I have found a true love for Skating especially within the Adult and inclusive communities and I am proud to say that I have recently qualified as a coach specialising in inclusive Skating. I also Coach on the learn to Skate courses in Bristol hence the snazzy boot covers you can see in my picture! (I was being interviewed for ITV to talk all things Inclusive skating)
My current discipline within the sport sits within show Skating and synchronised Skating and I’ve recently competed with the BSA shadows adult team in Sheffield.
Prior to Skating, I’ve been a competitive ballroom dancer/coach and overall performer. Outside of sports and Skating, I work as a nurse practitioner for the NHS and have been qualified since 2012.

JOSHUA DITTE
DAN RODENBURY
I started ice skating as an adult, having wanted to learn since I was a small child. I mostly do singles, although I've done some solo ice dance and more recently have persuaded my husband that we should try pair skating.
I skate for fun but do the occasional competition, and I enjoy the friendship and support in the adult skating community. I skate at Alexandra Palace ice rink in London and am a member of the London Adult Figure Skating Club.

KITTY SWANSON
DAN RODENBURY
I’m Daisy, and I’m a member of the Adult Working Group. I’ve been competing since 2004 (back in the days of NISA!) and carried my passion for skating all the way through into adulthood.
I am passionate about helping others to be at their best, and want to support creating opportunities for adult skaters to reach their goals. I aim to bring different perspectives and ideas to the group through my experience competing at both adult and national levels.

DAISY LEAHY
MILLIE KELMAN-JONES
I started skating in 1995 in Scotland, competing in singles and synchro, before taking a 10 year break from the sport. After moving to Nottingham I competed in adult synchro for 7 years.
I now skate purely for fun and enjoy contributing to the sport as a Data Replay Operator on tech panels. I'm a big advocate for the physical, mental and social benefits of skating, and love being part of the adult community!

LYNDSEY MILLAR
DAN RODENBURY
My name is Annabel and I'm a member of the Adult Working Group for British Ice Skating. I started Learn to Skate lessons as an adult in 2016 and what was meant to be a fun way to keep fit has become a real life passion. As someone who wasn't sporty at school I often pinch myself to think I've found a sport that I love and has given me so many amazing opportunities. I skate for Kirkcaldy Ice Skating Club in Scotland and also practice at Murrayfield rink, Edinburgh and Stirling. From my original goal of wanting to be able to skate backwards and stop without using the barrier I now compete in the UK and internationally.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to take part in such a great sport as an adult and hope to support other adults in their skating journeys.

ANNABEL MANSELL

TYPES OF ICE SKATING
Once you've learned the basics of ice skating, you might choose to continue your learning by progressing into one - or more! - of the specific types of ice skating sports. Whether you do this for fun or with plans to eventually compete, it's a great way to continue your ice skating journey. The different ice skating disciplines you could move into are:
FIGURE SKATING - SINGLES
Imagine gliding across the ice, combining athletic jumps, elegant spins, and intricate footwork, all set to beautiful music. Singles figure skating is a fantastic way to express yourself artistically while building strength, balance, and confidence.
It's a rewarding challenge that can be tailored to your skill level as you improve.
FIGURE SKATING - PAIRS
If you love the idea of teamwork and connection, pairs skating could be for you. This style involves working with a partner to perform synchronized movements, including thrilling lifts and throws. It’s not just about strength and precision but also about building trust and flowing seamlessly together on the ice.
FIGURE SKATING - ICE DANCE
Do you love music and rhythm? Ice dance brings the elegance of ballroom dancing to the rink, with a focus on style, timing, and musical interpretation. Unlike other forms of skating, ice dance doesn’t include jumps or throws, making it a great choice if you prefer a smoother, more rhythmic skating experience.
SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING
Short track speed skating is a lightning-fast, adrenaline-fuelled form of ice skating where competitors race each other around the rink! With a flourishing community of adult skaters taking part in the sport, it's an exciting alternative to figure skating. Most speed skating clubs offer taster sessions for beginners which are a great way to try the sport out. Find your closest club here:
SYNCHRONIZED SKATING
Looking for a social and dynamic skating experience? Synchronized skating involves teams of up to 16 skaters performing choreographed routines in perfect unison. This team sport emphasizes coordination, timing, and the joy of skating together as one. It’s especially popular among adult skaters in the UK, with opportunities for all levels to join and thrive.
Find your closest adult synchronized skating team on the map here:
