What’s Changed?

BIS Cup

The BIS Cup Series is going on tour! The BIS Cup is evolving for the 2026–27 season, improving the competitive pathway for National 4–8 skaters. Instead of two BIS-hosted qualifying events, a series of competitions across the UK will now form part of the BIS Cup pathway, culminating in the prestigious BIS Cup Final in Sheffield in May 2027.

This exciting new format, modelled on the Figure Skating Grand Prix, will make the BIS Cup more accessible, as skaters will have a greater choice of competitive dates and locations to secure their qualification for the final. Find out more here.

Adult Events

We are looking closely at the competitive opportunities for adult skaters in the UK, and the coming season will be a stepping stone towards future changes which we hope will benefit the community. This season BIS will host a Championship event and two opens (one for singles, one for ice dance), with a plan to work closely with clubs and rinks to encourage the establishment of more community-led competitions for adult skaters that take place at a greater range of locations. We will also be launching a detailed survey for the adult skating community to understand their competition priorities and what they would like to see in the future, to inform development in this area for 2027/28 and beyond.

British Championships

As noted in our previous communication, there have been some slight date changes to our planned dates for the 2026-27 Championship events; otherwise, these events will be delivered as normal. Qualifiers & Pre-Novice Events

These events will run much as they have in previous seasons, with just the September Ice Dance Qualifier being removed from the calendar based on feedback from members and our Technical Advisory Committee. Ice Dance Couples will be added as a category to the August 2026 Qualifier event instead. International Events

The Robin Cousins Cup, an ISU international singles and pairs competition, has been rescheduled for later in the season, now planned to take place in Nottingham in January 2027. The Bolero Cup, an ISU ice dance competition, will take place as planned in Sheffield in September 2026.

We are proud that these competitions will be joining an impressive lineup of international figure skating events on the ISU calendar taking place in the UK this season, including the Blackburn Trophy, Tayside Trophy, Britannia Cup and Steel City Trophy. And the excitement doesn't stop there, as in 2027 the National Ice Centre will welcome the ISU Synchronized Skating World Championships, ISU Synchronized Skating Junior World Championships and ISU Synchro9 World Championships (Junior and Senior) in one landmark combined event!

Why Are Things Changing?

Following recent organisational changes, and incorporating feedback from members around organisational growth and priorities, British Ice Skating is now operating with a smaller team and a greater focus on financial sustainability - as a result, there will unfortunately be fewer BIS-hosted competitions in the 2026–27 season. This will allow us to focus our resources on maintaining the quality, consistency and professional standard of the competitions we do deliver, while working closely with rinks and clubs around the country to support the growth of competitive opportunities delivered out in the wider skating community.

Crucially, we are taking the opportunity to reshape our event structure to ensure it remains relevant, accessible and aligned with the needs of today's skaters. We are exploring different approaches to competition delivery, including working more closely with clubs and rinks to empower them to deliver more competitions in a greater range of locations. The changes also reflect better alignment with the ISU’s event calendar and strategy, ensuring our pathways connect as seamlessly as possible with international competitive opportunities.

The 2026–27 season will be an important step in this ongoing process, as we continue to evaluate how best to support competitive skating across the country.

We appreciate members’ patience and understanding as we continue our work in this area. If you have any feedback on the new event calendar, we’d love to hear your thoughts:
