Niall Treacy stars at Short Track Speed Skating World Cup 3

Niall Treacy produced a brilliant performance to finish 4th in the 1000m at the third ISU World Cup of the season in Debrecen, Hungary.

Skating in his first ever A final he kept pace throughout to finish just off the podium. The result puts him 10th in the 1000m World Cup classification with one competition to go in Holland.


The 21-year-old said: “It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions over the past 4 days. With the 1500m and 500m not going as planned, but ultimately over the moon with how the 1000m on Sunday turned out.”

He added: “Making my first A final and finishing 4th gives me great confidence for the final Olympic Qualifier next weekend in Holland and for the rest of the season.”


As well as the 1000m success Niall’s brother Farrell made it to the B final of the 1500m. He finished 6th in that race, and now sits in 28th in the World Cup classification.


In the women’s side of the competition Elise Christie made it through the heats of the 1500m, she also made it through the preliminary round of the 500m alongside Kathryn Thomson.


Thomson, who also made it through the 1000m prelims later came 2nd in both her 500m and 1000m Ranking Finals.
