ADELE VELDSMAN

POSITION STANDING FOR:

TAC: Speed Skating

Vacancy: Short Track Official

CANDIDATE STATEMENT:

I am standing for the Short Track Official position on the Speed Skating Technical Advisory Committee. I would bring ten years of involvement in short track speed skating as a volunteer, practical officiating experience and a strong professional background in governance and safeguarding.

My involvement began through my son’s participation in the sport. Over the past decade, I have enjoyed seeing children develop as skaters and progress through the ranks. I also value what the sport contributes to their wider lives: confidence, discipline, resilience, friendships and experience of working with others. I want to help sustain an environment in which young people can develop both as athletes and as individuals.

I have experience as a heat box steward and timekeeper, and I hold a current BIS membership. I have officiated at at least five British Short Track Championships. My experience gives me an understanding of the contribution volunteers and officials make to the running of competitions, and of the importance of clear procedures, consistency and fair treatment of skaters.

Professionally, I work in healthcare with a strong background in governance, quality and risk. I am trained to Level 4 in safeguarding adults and children and serve as the safeguarding lead for a healthcare organisation. I would bring a structured approach to reviewing information, identifying risks, considering different perspectives and supporting clear, accountable decisions.

If elected, I would contribute to the committee’s work on short track technical guidance and the development of officials. I would support clear and accessible guidance, consistent application of procedures and opportunities for volunteers to build their skills. I would listen to the experiences of officials, coaches, skaters and families, while contributing impartially in the interests of the sport as a whole.

My aim is to combine practical knowledge of short track with my governance and safeguarding experience to support fair, well-run events and a positive experience for skaters. I would welcome the opportunity to give more back to a sport that has been part of my family’s life for more than ten years.
