Guide For Parents

Welcome to the Skate UK Learn to Skate programme! The Skate UK programme is an exciting and challenging programme for skaters of all abilities. It has been specifically designed and accredited by the National Ice Skating Association and is delivered by NISA Licensed Coaches. Your Record of Achievement details all the skill requirements for each of the levels, 1-10; they have been developed in a logical way, which we hope will enable you to progress from one level to the next with ease.

Online tutorials, to help guide you through each level, and information on Skate UK membership can be found in the Skate UK area at: http://www.iceskating.org.uk/skateuk/skateukhome. As you accomplish each skill, your coach will sign and date your Record of Achievement. Once you have achieved all four skills in each level, you will be able to progress to the next.

Upon completion of each level, you may wish to celebrate your success. Skate UK certificates, badges and medals should be available from your local ice rink. If they currently do not supply Skate UK merchandise then they can order on your behalf from the NISA office Tel: 0115 9888060.

Do not impose your ambitions on your child. Remember that figure skating is your child’s activity. Improvement and progress occur at different rates for each individual.

Don’t judge your child’s progress based on the performance of other athletes, and don’t push them based on what you think they
should be doing.

Be very supportive no matter what. There is only one question to ask your child- “Did you have fun?” If competitions, shows, and practices are not fun, your child should not be forced to participate.
Ice Skating provides lifelong friendships and much more. You should be happy that your child wants to participate.
