British Ice Skating would like to thank everyone who has been in touch or attended one of our virtual discussion calls over the past few days as we have continued to work to find the best possible solution for the British Synchronized Skating Championships 2026. We have listened closely to your feedback, your disappointment and frustrations about the situation, and will be doing our best to reflect our learnings both now and in the future.
A few key points came out of these discussions – firstly, that it was essential to keep a British Championships on the calendar to appropriately recognise and reward the work that teams have already put into preparing for this opportunity. Secondly, that the date change originally planned is not a viable alternative. And, thirdly, that it would be a significant disappointment for teams to lose a competitive date from the calendar entirely.
In light of these points, the following solution has been arrived at:
The British Synchronized Skating Championships 2026 will be held alongside the Steel City Trophy (SCT) in Sheffield from 7th-9th March. We greatly appreciate Amanda Hembrow and the SCT organising committee for their flexibility and willingness to accommodate this. Teams who are already entered into SCT will not face any additional entry fees associated with this change. Teams who have not yet entered SCT but who choose to do so in light of the incorporation of the Championships into the event, will need to complete an entry for SCT. Full details on this will be circulated separately soon.
We will run a separate event in Nottingham, to be known as the BIS Synchronized Skating National Cup, on the dates originally planned for the Championships (19th-21st February). This will ensure teams continue to have an additional competitive opportunity on the calendar and can still compete on these dates as planned. A revised timetable will be issued once entry numbers are confirmed, but categories will be kept on the same day(s) outlined on the previously released schedule.  We will be in touch directly with registered teams to confirm whether they choose to maintain their entry in this event or not. Full entry free refunds will be provided to any team that chooses to withdraw at this point.
We realise that this solution will not solve all the problems or concerns associated with this situation, and we will be working directly with affected teams to resolve individual circumstances wherever possible. We do, however, believe this is the plan that will maximise opportunities and experiences for athletes, while mitigating some of the financial impact. Please note – based on specific conversations with some of our Inclusive teams, we are exploring a possible separate solution for the Inclusive category’s Championships. We are contacting these teams directly to discuss this. Once again, from myself and the British Ice Skating Board, we apologise for the worry, uncertainty and ongoing challenges this situation has caused. Maggie Still
