We're so proud of BIS member Sorcha, who is using her experience of managing asthma while pursuing her figure skating goals to help and inspire others!
Sorcha is a National 2 figure skater who's teamed up with Asthma + Lung UK to encourage more children with asthma into physical activity and sport.
On World Lung Day on 25th September, Sorcha and her mum Kate will be sharing their journey and how they've handled any asthma obstacles in their way.
The 'Going for Gold' workshop, run by Asthma + Lung UK in collaboration with Breathe Buddies, aims to 'teach you and your child to spring past asthma and score big in sports' and will include Sorcha's story - 'from shortness of breath to skating success'.
See the Going for Gold + Asthma: Your child's asthma and sport leaflet for more information - including a fab figure skating craft activity!
We heard a little more from Sorcha about her love of sports and why she wanted to help the campaign:
"I am helping Asthma UK on their 'Going for Gold' initiative to help more kids with asthma like me to try out new sports and not be afraid; because although sometimes it's scary, I never let it stop me doing sports because they are fun, you make new friends, you are healthy, they help my mental health if I feel sad, and sometimes you can win a trophy which is nice!"
On her experience managing her asthma alongside skating, Sorcha shared:
"I started figure skating 3 years ago and I really love it because it is fun and I have made lots of friends. My favorite jump is the Axel and my favourite spin is a broken leg spin. I always take my medicine bag skating and use my blue inhaler to help open my lungs before skating, and I always have a really great training session because the medicine helps me to breathe. "I had a really bad time with my asthma recently and spent a lot of time off school, but now my asthma is doing much better with new medicine, and I just did my first competition of the year in Level 2 and it made me so happy - I got a new PB, 2 x Level 2 test passes and a clean skate and got to see all of the friends I made in Scotland!"
It's wonderful to see Sorcha sharing her passion and knowledge with others, and we hope the workshop is a great success!
