Solo Dance – Scale of Values and Levels of Difficulty

NISA have now released the Scale of Values (SoV) for the required elements for both the Solo Original Dance and the Solo Free Dance. This SoV will be used at the British Adult Championships, the second solo dance pilot to be held as part of the Alexandra Palace Solo Dance Series event and at the British Solo Dance Championships.

Information regarding clarification of the Levels of Difficulty has also been published, and again will be used at the events listed above.

It should be noted that all of this information has been written and adapted purely for these events and that, due to the enormity of this project, it will remain a document in progress and a working document for the forseeable future. Changes are not anticipated prior to the BAC event, but the document will be reviewed following this event.

The publication of this information provides the final link in allowing the solo dance events to use the IJS, not withstanding any software issues which arise at the event. NISA are therefore happy to confirm that all events at the BAC (excepting the exhibition events) and the Solo Dance Championships will use the IJS.

A guidance for judges’ document relating to Grade of Execution of elements will be issued very shortly and will also be published on the NISA website.

Solo Dance Series and Solo Dance Championships 2009/2010

The compulsory dances, original dance and free dance programme requirements for the Solo Dance Series and the British Solo Dance Championships 2009/2010 have now been published and can be accessed HERE.

Please note that these criteria only cover the standards that form part of the Solo Dance Championships. It is hoped that Clubs will continue to run solo dance events at other standards and couples events as in previous years. Criteria for these other sections will be published by the individual club, and will follow the criteria from last season. It is hoped that generic criteria for ALL standards, in both Solo dance and Couples dance will be operational from July 2010, moving towards IJS roll out across all events.

As most people will be aware, the Board of NISA made a commitment and priority to move forward and change the Solo Dance Championships to the IJS, as requested by many coaches and skaters at all levels. It was important to give skaters only 1 set of criteria to work to at each level, and hence it was agreed that the requirements for the Solo Dance Series events would match those required for the Championships to be held in July 2010. Unfortunately there are currently no ISU criteria for solo dance, therefore it was necessary to write criteria specifically for this event, including programme criteria for all levels, information regarding levels of difficulty, Scale of values and software to allow the Championships to run under the IJS. This has been a mammoth task and hence the inevitable delay in publication of the Announcement for this season. However, as this has now been produced it will require only minor modifications in future years and can be published much faster. Skaters will also be more aware of the requirements, allowing a more seamless transition from year to year in the future.

The generic criteria have been prepared involving the Technical Director, Dance Technical Committee, Coaching Committee and IJS officials, while keeping in line with the broad Board principles to move to ISU criteria in sections where possible, and to allow a progression from solo dance to couples with the aim of encouraging the development of new couples at all levels. It is acknowledged that these criteria are part of an on-going plan as all events in the UK gradually move to the IJS. Further changes to the entry standards and criteria will be considered after the Championship in July for the following season, but will be based on the same principles. Please note that all programme requirements for both Original Dance and Free Dance are MAXIMUM requirements and skaters are free to choose to skate as few or as many as they prefer according to their ability. There is no deduction for skating less than the maximum requirements.

The named clubs have been selected to host Solo Dance Series events having lodged E1 documentation with NISA and subsequently agreed to participate in the Series. Every Club who had lodged an E1 or notification of date at the time of preparation of this document was invited to participate in the Solo Dance Series. It is hoped that the number of events can be increased in future years, maintaining a spread of venues across the UK and dates running throughout the season until June 2011. Any Club interested in hosting an event in future years will be given opportunity to register interest with NISA shortly.

This change is undoubtedly the biggest for a number of years and, despite the enormity of the task, NISA are excited at the opportunity to move forward into IJS with the Championships 2009/2010 and the roll out of IJS to the Solo Dance Series and hope skaters enjoy the opportunity to be part of this exciting development. We thank everyone involved for their co-operation and wish all skaters the best of luck for the forthcoming season.
