Whipps Cross Midwife Wins Ice Skating Medal

A MIDWIFE from Whipps Cross Hospital has won a silver medal at the British Synchronised Skating Championships.

Jamie Richardson, 40, from Gidea Park, only started ice skating six years ago as a way of keeping fit and trains once a week at the Lee Valley Ice Centre.

His coach, Danni Goldie, helped the group put a routine together to help the team win the medal in Sheffield last week.

Jamie said that when he started ice skating for fun, he never thought he would end up winning medals.

He said: “I started on a basic ‘learn to skate’ programme and then got invited to join this team.

“I had no idea what it was at the beginning, but I love it.

“You get great support and encouragement - I am a different person on the ice, and you can just forget the outside world.

“Our team is a good example to people to take up activities at any age. I am the youngest member!”

As someone who watched Torvill and Dean’s career as a child, Jamie was thrilled to meet his childhood heroes, who have been using the Lee Valley Ice Centre for practice sessions with celebrities for the ITV show, Dancing on Ice.
