Oxford Ice Rinks 25th Anniversary Gala

Oxford Ice Rink, the Oxford School of Skating and the Oxford City Stars Ice Hockey Team will celebrate their 25th Anniversary in December of this year.

In 1980, money was raised by the Oxford Ice Skating Trust (OXIST) for the construction of a new ice rink in Oxford. ó a project that was taken over by the Oxford City Council, who continue to own Rink, which is now operated by Fusion-Lifestyle Ltd..

The rink, designed by Nicholas Grimshaw, was built on Oxpens Road and opened 25 yrs ago in 1984. Looking like a ship, thanks to two 30-metre masts at each end that earned it the nickname, "the Cutty Sark", the design won several architectural awards.

To celebrate the rink will be presenting an Anniversary Gala over 2 days on the 5th and 6th December with 2 performances on each day. Star of the show will undoubtedly be Martin Minshull. One of the founding Coaches of the Oxford School of Skating and still coaching at Oxford, Martin is an inspiration to all skaters young and old. He was five times British Men's Professional Champion, and three times Professional World Ice Skating Champion, and will be returning to the ice in a performing role for the first time in 25 years and some 52 years after his first professional performance.

Also appearing will be former World and European Championship competitor, British Champion and HOT ICE star, Tammy Sear. Tammy who started her skating career with the Oxford School of Skating will be making a nostalgic return to her home rink.

The Freestylers winners of ITVís Search for a Star competition and Stars of the Dorval & Dean Tour will also be performing together with many Oxford skaters past and present. Tickets for the Gala are £5 and are available from the Ice Rink Box Office on 01865467002.

Following the Saturday evening performance on 5th December there will be a Reunion party for all Oxford skaters past and present and of course friends and family.

Tickets are £12 (including buffet and first drink) and need to be bought in ADVANCE. Please contact Sue Hands on 07971 441171 or email: to purchase tickets.
