Norwich Festive Ice Rink Under Threat

Norwich's popular open air ice rink may not be returning to the city this Christmas.

The news that the future of the outdoor rink is in jeopardy will come as an extra blow to skaters already reeling from the sudden closure of Norwich's permanent ice rink, The Ice Experience.

Today a spokeswoman for the Forum Trust stressed that no decision had yet been finalised on rink returning to Millennium Plain but added that it was “unlikely” it would be a part of the Christmas attractions.

She said: “As part of wider Norwichristmas activities and events, The Forum is currently planning its Christmas offering.

“Whether or not this will include an ice rink is not yet confirmed. The Forum Trust is exploring a number of opportunities to ensure that The Forum continues to provide an exciting and festive programme for Christmas 2009.”

The Forum's ice rink has been a much looked-forward to attraction in the run-up to Christmas since it first appeared in the city in 2003.

For many families it heralds the start of the festive season and has become a well-liked activity alongside the more traditional Christmas shopping.

When it was first set up, the rink was sponsored by EDF Energy, but in 2006 the company decided not to continue its sponsorship.

Tracey Tutt, a web designer from the Golden Triangle, said her two young daughters, three and five, would be upset if the Christmas rink did not go ahead this year, as they have enjoyed its special toddler sessions in the past.

She said: “I don't think I ever saw it not busy. There was always someone there so I can't understand if they haven't got enough money to do it again.

“With the lights on at night it was lovely to even just go and watch.

“It would be a real shame if it's not there this year. Every time we go into the city at Christmas my girls always ask to go and see it, even if it is just to watch as it makes Christmas extra special.”

The spokeswoman for the Forum Trust said that if the ice rink did not go ahead it would be looking to have another attraction in its place.
