Mr Ernie East
Ernie was a high level ice dancer in the 1950`s partnering, at one time, with Pamela Weight, until his career as an engineer took him away from the competitive side of the sport. He remained involved in the sport that he loved as an NISA Ice Dance Judge, first in London then in the Swindon and Bristol area.
When the Link Centre opened in Swindon, he was heavily involved from the first day, helping to establish its ice dance club, and by judging many N.I.S.A Ice Dance Tests. He also supported the Ice Dance community at the link by judging the recreational star awards dance tests.
He continued to skate at the link, for many years participating in the Dance Intervals and encouraging skaters to become involved in Ice Dancing. He was always ready to advise and support the Ice Coaches and skaters and would attend late night training sessions before competitions.
Ernie, used his engineering background to create amazing props and scenery for the link centres Ice Shows though the 1980`s and 1990`s. He used his love of photography to film many of the ice shows and was always happy to supply copies to the cast members.
Even after he was no longer able to skate himself, he would still visit the rink, and was happy to pass his knowledge to the next generation of skaters. He was never a great one for receiving thanks for all that he did for the sport but I am sure there are many skaters that were very great full for his all his advice and support.
His Funeral is on Thursday 21st April at Kingsdown Crematorium, Kingsdown Road, Swindon, SN25 6SG at 12pm.
If you wish to send flowers to the Chapel of Rest, The Broadway, Witworth Road, Swindon, Wiltshire
