NEED4SPEED LAUNCHES TO UNEARTH NEXT GB SHORT TRACK STARS

GB Short Track Speed Skating has launched its Need4Speed talent identification campaign, aiming to attract experienced skaters from across the country to join the Performance Academy, targeting Winter Olympic Success in years to come.

The sport is looking to attract male and female athletes aged between 14* and 18 years old, with experience and background of skating on ice. Competitive and motivated by medalling at world and Olympic level, the Performance Academy will develop athletes’ skills and inner drive and determination to succeed.

Athletes from sports such as Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Ice Dance as well as Speed Skating or regular general session skaters are encouraged to fill in the Need4Speed form to get a chance to make it to the next stage.

Performance Director Stewart Laing said:

“This is a massive opportunity for anyone with skating experience who would like to explore their chances of becoming an Olympic Medallist in Short Track Speed Skating. If you’ve never tried the sport, it’s not a problem, it’s fast paced, adrenaline fuelled, tactical and a true test of physicality. If you dream of standing on the podium at World Championships and Olympic Games, why not try out Need4Speed and see how good you could be at Short Track Speed Skating?”

The Performance Academy is managed by Olympian, World Record Breaker and World and European medallist Jon Eley, operated out of Ice Sheffield, where athletes will travel for intensive and weekend training camps alongside regular training back at their local bases.

Eley said: “Having come from Ice Hockey myself, before I made the switch to short track aged 15, I know the raw capabilities we are looking for to give you a strong base to transfer into the sport. This is a really exciting national campaign and I’m looking forward to seeing our future hopefuls develop over the coming Olympic cycle’s.”

Jo Eley, Olympian, European Medallist and national team development coach for the last 8 years, is the head coach of the academy and added; “Developing athletes both on and off the ice is the aim of our academy and taking skating skills along with inner drive and determination is an exciting prospect as a coach. The sport has some fantastic champions currently at the top of the sport and ensuring the next cohort of athletes is nipping at their heels is vital for Britain’s international success.”
