Joe Buckland Inspires School Children to ‘Learn to Skate’

In his skating career, Joe has represented Great Britain in competitions around the globe. Now he goes back to his Nottingham roots, inspiring school children to get on the ice with Skate UK’s Learn to Skate programme.

Joe’s visit to John Blow Primary School in Newark on Tuesday 8th September came after a full on summer of training for the skater. After announcing a split from former skating partner Olivia Smart, Joe has been focusing on his own training, looking for a new partner and completing his coaching qualifications all at the same time.

The skater gave an inspiring assembly to the children, providing an insight into his life on the ice as well as the world of figure skating as a whole. From the places he has visited to the trophies that he has won, the schoolchildren hung on to every word as he shared his passion for the ice.

Office Manager Miss Trigg commented on Joe’s visit, saying;

"Joe was fantastic with the children, he really got them engaged and they had lots of questions for him.  The children were really excited to meet him. They were in awe of his many boots and his trophy especially."

Joe’s talk inspired the children and has shown them that with hard work and dedication, they too could skate their way around the world.

Many of the children will follow up the school visit with a trip to their local ice rink, The National Ice Centre, Nottingham, where the Learn to Skate programme is taught throughout the year. The eight stage course takes students through the basics providing them with the foundation they need to pursue ice skating to a competitive level.
