GB Adults dazzle in Oberstdorf 2018

From the 14th the 19th May 2018 the renowned ISU Adult Figure Skating Competition took place in Oberstdorf, Germany. With over 650 adult competitors coming from all around the world, the competition is regarded as one of the major highlights of the adult skating calendar with Team GB sending one of its largest squads to date.

With a mix of newcomers and previous GB competitors the competition showcased some real stand out performances from our British adults with plenty of British personal bests being achieved. One GB skater who stood out in particular was Monica Brown, who blew the competition away with two magnificent performances in Gold Class IV winning both the artistic and free skating. Really showcasing that age is no barrier in adult skating!

Other highlights of the 2018 competition included performances from several top level ex-Olympic skaters, including Midori Ito. With the increasing numbers of ex-professionals and Olympians now competing in the yearly competition it goes to show how high the standard of competition is in Germany for our British adult skaters.

Speaking with Team GB Skater David Arnold after the event, David said: “The British Adults once again found Oberstdorf to be a fantastic and welcoming competition. As one of the highlights of the adult skating calendar, it is a exciting opportunity to be able to skate in such a wonderful location surrounded by such a supportive crowd. I know we are all hoping to return next year and skate once again at this superb rink.”

Additionally, following a significant international campaign to reduce the usage of plastic, Oberstdorf made some of its very own environmental changes this year. Spectators were asked to place gifts for the skaters in baskets instead of throwing them on to the ice in plastic bags, helping to reduce plastic usage at the event, a decision welcomed and fully supported by all.

NISA were also delighted to hear that GB skater Lesley Ridley was proposed to by her partner Gareth on top of the Nebelhorn during their time in Oberstdorf. We would like to send the couple all our best wishes for the future.

A huge well done to all those who travelled to Oberstdorf. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and produced performances they are proud of. We can’t wait to watch everyone back in action next year. For all the results and further information on the competition, click here
