Cambridge Ice Arena Opens with Gala - Sunday 29 September 2019

To celebrate the opening of our new ice rink in Cambridge we have arranged an opening gala with the best of British Figure Skating.

The stars performing include British Men’s Champion Graham Newberry, British Women’s Champion Natasha McKay, British Junior Ice Dance Champions Sasha Fear & George Waddell plus British Synchro Champions Team Phoenix.

The champions will be joined by a host of other top competitors and some young stars of the future.  The gala will last 1hr 15mins and commences as 1pm.  Prior to the gala there will be a reception for invited guests with speeches from 12:30pm.

The event is part of a weekend of celebrations including the CLIC Ice Hockey University Alumni event on Saturday 28 September.

The opening of a new ice rink in a new city is a major event and these stars have come to welcome Cambridge into the skating family of venues.  They are used to performing on the world stage and many will be showcasing their latest programme for the International season ahead.

Nick Russell, Director of Cool Venues, said “We are delighted that the rink is now open and that so many champions have been able to come to share this historic moment for ice skating and ice hockey in the city.  David Gattiker had a vision for creating a place for everyone to skate in Cambridge and after a long journey his vision has become a reality.  This is a celebration of ice skating in the city with the figure skating gala on Sunday and the CLIC Ice Hockey University Alumni event on Saturday evening.  We look forward to the next generations of champions coming from Cambridge in a rink developed by Cool Venues.”

The gala is free for those who are skating either in the morning or afternoon session at the Ice Arena.  Tickets are still available through the website at https://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/cambridge/cambridge-ice-arena/alerts/19340
