British figure Skaters prepared for European Championships

Team GB figure skaters have been training hard in preparation for the annual ISU European Figure Skating Championships.  The five day long competition will be taking place in Stockholm, Sweden from the 28th January to the 1st February 2015.

The event will feature the best figure skating talent from across Europe. Representing Great Britain in the Ladies singles programmes will be 2015 British National Senior Ladies Champion, Karly Robertson from Dundee. Chosen to compete in the Men’s singles programmes was 2015 British Men’s Senior National Champion, Phillip Harris from Coventry. 

Ice Dance couple and 2014 European Bronze medallists, Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland will be competing in the ice dance programmes. 

The two Pairs couples chosen to compete are,Amani Fancy and Christopher Boyadji , and British National Senior Pairs Champions, Caitlin Yankowskas and Hamish Gaman.  

Yankowas and Gaman said: “We are thrilled to compete at our first ISU European Championship together. We have been training a lot over the past few weeks and we have found our rhythm as a team and focused everyday at completing the tasks our coaches give us with dedication, hard work and perseverance.

“For us the ultimate goal of the European Championships is to show improvement and share our passion with the judges and audience. We are looking forward to competing better in Stockholm than we have at any of our previous events this season and to get the world qualifying score in our Free program. We would love nothing less than to go on and proudly represent Great Britain in Shanghai at the World Championships in March.”

Robin Cousins, Performance Director said: “The European Championships is a huge event because it’s the first major competition ahead of the new Olympic cycle. We have a strong team heading out to Stockholm and they have been training hard to make sure that they are on their top form. The event is a great chance for the skaters to get a feel for international competing again and it will give us an idea of what we need to work on and improve ahead of the World Championships.”

Also competing in the Ice Dance programme will be 2015 British National Senior Dance Champions, Olivia Smart and Joe Buckland. This will be the first international competition for the pair as senior skaters.

Robin commented: “Joe and Olivia have shown great promise as two serious international contenders this season and I am looking forward to seeing how they get on.”

The European Figure Skating Championships will begin on with an opening ceremony on Wednesday 28th January at the Erricson Globe, Stockholm Sweden.  Following the ISU European Figure Skating Championships will be the ISU World Figure Skating Championships taking place in Shanghai, China from the 23rd to the 29th March 2015.
