Britain’s best gear up for World Figure Skating Championships

This week, the culmination of a season’s worth of hard work will see our best figure skaters competing in Helsinki for the most important date on the skating calendar.

Our British Champions – Natasha McKay, Graham Newberry, Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson and Zoe Jones and Christopher Boyadji (pictured) – will all be aiming to impress at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships.

Natasha McKay has skated incredibly well this season, scoring consistently high in international competitions, including first place finishes in the Europa Cup Skate Helena and the Open d' Andorra. Dundee’s Natasha will be hoping she can push on and build upon her strong skating in Finland.

Graham Newberry recently competed at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Taipei. The Junior and Senior Men’s British Champion has improved with every skate this season and will be aiming for new highs this week.

Ice Dancers Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson have enjoyed a great season.Lilah said: “It honestly makes me so excited and proud to represent Great Britain on the world stage.

“I have grown up skating in Britain, all the way from solo dance so to be able to carry the flag to the World Championships, among so many other nations, is a dream come true.”

Lewis shares Lilah’s excitement, he said: “It's such a privilege to represent Great Britain and NISA at any event but it's even more special to be competing in such a prestigious event as the World Championships.”

In the Pairs, Zoe Jones and Christopher Boyadji will be aiming to keep up the good form they have shown this season. The Swindon based skaters were interviewed earlier this year in their local paper ahead of the European Figure Skating Championships, you can read about how they’ve been preparing for major competitions here.

The World Figure Skating Championships runs from 29th March – 2nd April. There is an app for smart phones on both the Apple App Store and on the Google Play Store called Helsinki2017 – download it for live updates and other information.

Live updates will be posted on NISA social media channels.

Good luck to our skaters in Helsinki!
